FROM LINDA PUNTNEY, MARCH 21, 2009: Over the past 20 years, JEA/NSPA conventions have typically met or exceeded our expectations with just the usual mailings and Web site information. This year in Phoenix things are significantly different. The hotel and registration numbers are behind the pace of previous spring conventions, and we realize we need to give an extra nudge to our members to get their registrations in and their hotel reservations made so they can get the biggest bang for their convention bucks. Next week registration and hotel costs go up.
We know some people out there are planning to attend the convention but have not yet signed up. We know you've been busy with deadlines and teaching — and with spring break, too. But this message is a reminder about the fantastic convention we have planned in Phoenix.
First, we are asking you to register as soon as possible to help give us an accurate picture of how many people will be coming to the Phoenix convention. To register by the early deadline of March 26 CLICK HERE.
Second, we have committed to filling a certain amount of rooms at the Hyatt and Wyndham hotels. While we have met our obligation at the Hyatt, we still have rooms at the Wyndham to fill by Tuesday, March 24. After that day, the hotel can assign us penalties and increase the room rate from the discount we negotiated.
We know times are tough, and you work hard to earn every dollar. JEA and NSPA are committed to providing the best value, an amazing education and fun experience for you in Phoenix. Visit our convention blog to see what's in store.
We're excited to show you the new sessions planned for Phoenix as well as have you learn from the solid programming that has become part of these conventions. We want to see you there.
FROM LOGAN AIMONE, MARCH 17, 2009: We're about 30 days away from the 2009 JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Phoenix, and things are heating up!
The Hyatt in Phoenix is basically sold during our convention. JEA and NSPA have a room block reserved at the Wyndham, located directly behind the Hyatt and closer to the light rail transportation. If you still need to reserve hotel rooms, I would recommend you stay at the Wyndham. The rooms are nice and the price is the same as if you stayed at the Hyatt. We still have ample room in our block at the Wyndham.
Directions to use the reservations Web site are on the Phoenix convention blog: http://studentpressblogs.org/phx2009/?p=28
When this hotel fills, we will direct you to an overflow booking service.
The early bird deadline for Phoenix is next Thursday, March 26. That's also the deadline for JEA's Write-Offs, to order T-shirts, and to sign up for Break with a Pro, Swap Shop, media tours, luncheons and pre-convention workshops. Space in these programs is not guaranteed after March 26.
At the moment, we have some room in all of the pre-convention workshops. Space is limited. If you have already registered for the convention and now would like to do a pre-convention workshop, please contact Mike Gesellchen at (612) 625-1857, and he will help you.
I can't tell you how exciting this convention is. We have more sessions on multimedia technology than ever. We have spacious rooms and halls at the convention center, Hyatt and Cronkite School of Journalism. We have moved Swap Shop to Friday evening to accommodate more student learning during the day and an alternative evening activity. Phoenix now has light rail transit, so you can get to other great parts of the Valley and from the airport. Plus, it should be beautiful weather and you'll be around the best students and teachers anywhere in the country -- all ready to Power Up!
FROM LOGAN AIMONE, FEB. 2, 2009: The hotel block at the Hyatt in Phoenix is filling at a nice pace, and I wanted to mention JEA and NSPA also have reserved a small block of rooms at the Wyndham Hotel, which is located directly behind (west of) the Hyatt. It's actually a block closer to the light rail and a few restaurants. The nightly rate is the same. This hotel was remodeled within the past year, and it is beautiful and a bit smaller than the Hyatt. We need to fill blocks at both properties, so take your pick while rooms are available.
To reserve a room online, click here. You should see the Phoenix Power Up logo and JEA/NSPA.
The hotel also accepts phone reservations at (602) 333-5000 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. mountain standard time. Make sure you mention you are with the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention.
