FROM LOGAN AIMONE, SEPT. 19: The room block at the St. Louis Renaissance Grand & Suites Hotel is sold out for some nights. There is no official overflow hotel.

IF YOU HAVE NOT YET REQUESTED ROOMS:
Please contact A Room With A View for information on the designated JEA/NSPA overflow hotel. They will secure the lowest rates within walking distance to the St. Louis Renaissance Grand & Suites Hotel. A Room With A View can be reached at 1-800-780-4343 Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time. This is a FREE SERVICE to all JEA/NSPA attendees.

IF YOU HAVE REQUESTED RENAISSANCE ROOMS BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED A CONFIRMATION:
Your request that could not be accommodated at the Renaissance will be forwarded to A Room With A View within a few days. Then ARWAV will contact you to work out the details for booking rooms at a nearby overflow hotel that meets your needs. If you have not heard from ARWAV by the middle of next week, follow the steps above to contact them. The phone number for the St. Louis Renaissance Grand & Suites Hotel is (314) 621-9600.

A few other notes:

  • JEA and NSPA had a few rooms on hold until today, so any rooms not needed by JEA and NSPA will be released for booking by convention attendees based on the faxes that the Renaissance has already received.
  • There are still a few rooms at the Renaissance on some nights, so if you don’t need to stay for every night of the convention, you might still be able to get in the Renaissance.
  • If you do have rooms reserved at the Renaissance but now discover you don’t need them, please post that information to JEAHELP so someone who is looking for rooms can use them and the rooms will stay in the JEA/NSPA block.
  • Even though the room block is sold on some nights, we want to be sure JEA and NSPA get credit for as many room nights as possible. This is how we are able to use the meeting space for free. Otherwise it would cost tens of thousands of dollars!

FROM BETH ANN BRADY, SEPT. 9: On p. 6 in the first gray column that reads 'Coming to the convention? Get involved!' my email address is incorrect. I'm the person to contact if you want to judge or proctor the write-off contests. My correct email is
bbrady@ladue.k12.mo.us. Drop me a note indicating what contest you prefer.

FROM NANCY FREEMAN, SEPT. 9: On page 4, the registration booklet states the Outreach Academy is Nov. 12 for St/ Louis teachers and Nov. 13 for those further away. In reality there is only one day of the Academy on Nov. 13 for both in-town and out-of town teachers. The Academy is a free, intensive pre-convention seminar for publications advisers who have five years or fewer advising experience and/or teach in schools traditionally underrepresented in JEA membership, especially low-income, urban and rural schools. The program includes discussion of teaching journalism to highly diverse populations, effective instructional techniques, resources for teachers in and out of the classroom, and organizations ready to help advisers. Limited to 30 participants, the Outreach Academy runs from 8:30 am-4:30 pm and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Tuition is free.
Participation in the program also includes free registration to the St. Louis JEA/NSPA Convention Nov. 13-16. Priority for admission will be given to advisers from the host city and surrounding urban areas. Special consideration will be given to advisers who are new to JEA in schools with economically disadvantaged students, advisers of color, and advisers with fewer than five years’ advising experience. As an added bonus, outreach participants are eligible for $150 scholarships to other journalism workshops. To apply, complete the application form on page 11 and mail with your letter, which must be received by Oct. 10 to: JEA Outreach Academy, c/o Mary Williams, 511 Oaktree Crossing Ct., Ballwin, MO 63021. E-mail marywilliams@u-city.k12.mo.us for more information.
