NEWSWIRE

After the fourth issue of the 2002-2003 school year, NewsWire has been discontinued. The JEA Web site will be the primary source of news for JEA members.

“For most organizations, moving from a print to an online publication is all about cost savings,” said Editor Bradley Wilson. “For JEA, this simply wasn’t the case. JEA has enough money brought in through conventions and membership dues to finance the publications in almost any form. However, the board felt that by moving to an online publication we could better serve our members.”

The annual budget for NewsWire printing and mailing was $9,750. NewsWire advertising income was projected to be about $2,500.

HISTORY

  • First editor was Elizabeth Ahlgren with Molly Wiseman as associate editor. NewsWire was to be published in October, January and April.
  • From Vol. 1, No. 1, published October 1973:
“This marks the first edition of the JEA newsletter, NewsWire. It is our aim to bring news of conferences, organizations and happenings of interest and concern to members of the Journalism Education Association.
“We expect to concentrate on developing a feeling of unity within the regional area by having special stories and reports for each region along with the national news.
“NewsWire will also be a medium to keep related organizations informed of JEA progress. Coverage will in no way duplicate Communcation: Journalism Education Today, but rather cover news items and news features.
In the first issue was a story about the fall convention in Atlanta. JEA expected 1,200 people to attend. Double room rate at the Regency Hyatt House was $21 a night.
It outlined JEA services including newsletter at least three times a year, a HOTLINE phone instant help service, a postcard help service, reduced prices on publications, annual reports for all members, an updated yearly membership directory, a press freedom fund, yearly commission reports, local and regional JEA meetings and social gatherings.
  • In Vol. 14, No. 4 new editor Ron Hayes wrote this was a “more computerized” issue. “Part of this issue was typeset on a sophisticated Compugraphic system, part was produced in two desktop type computer programs and another part on a more antiquated typeset system.”
