COMMUNICATION:
JOURNALISM EDUCATION TODAY

MISSION
Communication: Journalism Education Today will provide educational materials to JEA members on a wide variety of topics related to all aspects of scholastic media with lesson plans, teaching tips, current research and other resources.

LEAD STORY
The cover story in each issue will be on a major issue of importance to journalism advisers nationwide. The author of this article is also responsible for coming up with at least two sidebars on related issues. The major article needs to include quotations from sources including professional journalists (broadcasters, photographers, writers, designers), students, other advisers, administrators and other reputable sources. All copyrighted material and other sources must be properly cited. This article can be written either in journalistic style (with quotations attributed in the text) or in journal style (with footnotes). In any case, it needs to be an in-depth (3,000 - 4,000 words) exploration of the topic. The author is also responsible for submitting (but not necessarily writing) all of the following.

Sidebars
Two, each 250 words or less; lists, stories by other experts, personality profiles of professionals in related field, etc.

Lesson plan
A complete lesson plan to be used by advisers teaching a unit on the topic of choice; should include other sources (such as films, books, Web pages, magazines, people) that could be used to supplement the classroom instruction

Objectives
At least five objectives, "After reading this article, the adviser should..."
Worksheets At least two hands-on activities that can be included as black-line masters for advisers to duplicate and distribute to their classes; up to five may be included as space permits

Artwork
At least three photographs, infographs, drawings, clippings, etc. that can be used on the cover and inside; the author must secure permission to print the art; complete caption information (including the identities of all identifiable people)

FEATURE STORY
Each issue will include up to five feature stories, each between 1,000 and 2,500 words in length. These features are designed to give the magazine a wide appeal and should be on topics unrelated to the cover story. However, like the cover story, they should include quotations from sources including professional journalists (broadcasters, photographers, writers, designers, and the like), students, other advisers, administrators and other reputable sources. All copyrighted material and other sources must be properly cited. Features can be written either in journalistic style (with quotations attributed in the text) or in journal style (with footnotes). The author should also supply at least one sidebar and sufficient artwork.

HOW-TO SECTIONS
GALLERY SECTIONS

To round out the magazine and to include more student publications when possible, each issue will contain a number of gallery pages and how-to sections on a variety of topics.

BIOGRAPHY
Authors are also responsible for providing the editor with their photograph, short biography and contact information (mailing address, e-mail address and phone number(s). Each author will receive two copies of the finished publication. All original art and disks will be returned.
