Yearbook Adviser of the Year

About the Award

The National High School Yearbook Adviser of the Year program is designed to honor outstanding high school advisers and their exemplary work from the previous year, as well as throughout their careers.

A selection panel, made up of the most recently selected YAOY, representatives of Quill and Scroll, National Scholastic Press Association and JEA, will review the entries at the fall JEA/NSPA National Convention. Points will be awarded, and the top advisers will be named National Yearbook Adviser of the Year, Distinguished Adviser or Special Recognition Adviser.

Announcement of winners will be made in December or January. Winners will be recognized during the adviser luncheon at the fall JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention where the Yearbook Adviser of the Year will speak. The top five winners will be featured in the convention program and will be part of a panel discussion about yearbooks.

A $1,000 award for the winner's school, and up to four $500 awards for Distinguished Advisers' schools may be used to buy equipment for the yearbook classroom or to fund student scholarships to summer workshops. The Yearbook Adviser of the Year will have his or her travel and hotel paid for the convention when he or she receives the award.

Those not receiving the Yearbook Adviser of the Year top honor may reactivate their portfolios up to three more times, or until they have won the top spot. Unless otherwise requested portfolios will be kept on hand for three years. Applicants need to submit a current yearbook and answer the 14 questions to reactivate their entry.

The National Yearbook Adviser of the Year competition is underwritten by

  • Platinum-level sponsors ($2,000) — Herff Jones, Inc., Jostens Printing and Publishing, Taylor Publishing Co., Walsworth Publishing Co
  • Gold-level sponsors ($1,000) — Lifetouch Publishing
