NEW!

PROPOSED for the fall of 2008 (St. Louis)

Pending Board approval, this would REPLACE the current contest 32. Two-Weeks' Work

32. PHOTO STORY (carry-in)
NATURE OF THE CONTEST
You will submit three, four or five of your photographs that appeared in last year's yearbook, will appear in this year's yearbook or that have been published in the school news publication within the last year and that have not been entered in a previous national JEA competition. All photographs should be related to a common theme and should visually tell a story. They should be numbered so the judges can see the sequence intended by the photographer. Photos may be color or black-and-white or a combination of color and black-and-white. Mount each image separately on 11-by-14-inch black, gray or white photo mounting boards and affix caption information (and a tearsheet if one is available) to the back of each separate entry. The photos may be traditional film or digitally produced. There is no minimum size for the photos; maximum is 11 by 14 inches. Captions must be included with all pictures. A written story may be included and, if included, should be affixed to the back of the first picture. Pictures need not be cropped for competition in the same manner as they appeared or will appear in the publication. You are responsible for delivering your own photographs to the contest room and remaining for a two-hour, small-group critique session.
WHAT THE JUDGES WILL LOOK FOR
Imaginative subject matter; technical quality and excellence; neatness in mounting; photo composition; visual impact; story told in each photograph as well as in the package of images; simplicity; cropping; lighting. Quality of the caption and written story may also be considered.

If you have feedback, please e-mail Bradley Wilson.

NEW!

PROPOSED for the fall of 2009 (Washington, D.C.) with a pilot in the spring of 2009 (Phoenix)

  • For all on-site photography contests, 28-32, the rules would be amended to require submission of digital images, not, as the current rules state, "photographs mounted separately on 11-by-14-inch white, black or gray mounting board. Entries mounted larger or smaller will be disqualified."
  • The submission guidelines would require pictures at approximately 5"x7" at 300ppi, RGB, JPEG.
  • The following information should be included in the Photoshop File Info Description field, "<Complete caption.>" Photo by <photographer's name>, school (city, state, adviser name)."
  • Photos would be named using the following naming convention: "contestnumber_schoolnumber_printnumber.JPG." For example, Bradley High School in Cary, N.C. has a school number of 3183. If a student from that school were entering the portfolio contest, #33, the file name would be: 33_3183_a.JPG for the first print, 33_3183_b.JPG for the second print and so on.
  • Photographers could submit their photos when the Write-off desk is open on Thursday or Friday. Assistance will be provided for students with technical difficulties on Thursday ONLY. Students may submit their work by CD or flash drive on-site when the Write-off desk is open. Until the Monday prior to the convention, students may submit their photos to a designated e-mail address or FTP site.
  • The critiques and judging will take place during the day Friday as a regular class session. No more than 50 contestants would be allowed in each of the photo contests, 25 in each critique room beginning at 9 a.m. Photographers would NOT receive a separate individual written critique but would receive a copy of notes on all of the photos, including their photos, in their contest.
  • During the 4-6 p.m. a viewing and large-group critique of some of the stand-out entries in the photography Write-off competitions.

If you have feedback, please e-mail Bradley Wilson.
