Journalism Education Association and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation jointly sponsor the Cornerstone Award. This award recognizes two secondary schools that have shown their students, teachers and administration thoroughly understand the importance of the First Amendment. Entrants will demonstrate this understanding by conducting activities that promote knowledge of the First Amendment schoolwide. The Executive Committee of JEA and a representative from the NAA Foundation will select the winners and reserve the right not to give an award.
Entrants must answer a variety of questions to indicate how their schools support the First Amendment and to indicate any special activities they have participated in to confirm that support. Questions are included below the application form.
A $2,500 award will go to each winning school to be used to further support the First Amendment through the school’s journalism program. Each winning school will also receive a certificate. JEA and the NAA Foundation will invite the principal or a representative of each winning school to attend the spring JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention to accept the award. This representative will have his or her travel and hotel paid by the sponsoring groups.

- A copy of the student media publication policy or policies for each student publication, student-run Web site or broadcast outlet at the school.
