JEA Student Editorial Cartoonist Award
in honor of Herb Block’s 100th birthday

JEA High Student Editorial Cartoon Contest & JEA Middle School Editorial Cartoon Contest Winners

The winners of the JEA Student Editorial Cartoonist Award in honor of Herb Block’s 100th birthday were announced at the opening ceremony of the D.C. JEA/NSPA National High School Convention on Nov. 12.

Athelia Knight, an original Herb Block Foundation board member and former Washington Post employee who now teaches journalism at Georgetown University, presented the awards to the middle school and high school winners.

HIGH SCHOOL WINNER
Alan Kawahara
Orchard Park High School, Orchard Park, New York.

Pulitzer Prize-winning judge Matt Davies stated:
“Showing prodigious caricaturing skills and an impressive level of visual sophistication, Alan managed to convey his personal opinion on the 2008 Presidential race with skepticism, wit and clarity. These qualities — coupled with a playful disregard for editorial "decorum" — won Alan this year's Herblock Prize for High School Students.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL WINNER
Aries Barry
West Seneca East Middle School , West Seneca, New York.

Davies stated:
“For maximum effect, a good editorial cartoonist seeks out irony to be exploited in as creative and communicative a manner as possible. I chuckled at the "we fat" wordplay of Aries's cartoon And then raised my eyebrows after contemplating the irony of an entertainment phenomenon wherein physically ever-expanding Americans play sports —via a hand held remote and video screen. In this case, Aries scored a cartooning home run.”

Frank Swoboda, director of the Herb Block Foundation board of directors, and parents of the winners were also present.

Both the winners had the adviser: Mary Jane Poleta, Buffalo News Educational Services Manager, The Buffalo News, Buffalo, N.Y. As it turns out, these entries came through the NIE program of the Buffalo newspaper.

In addition to the award, the winners received:

  • Round-trip plane tickets for the winner and one parent or guardian to attend the JEA/NSPA convention.
  • Free hotel accommodations and meal expenses for the JEA convention.
  • Free registration for the convention.
  • A $500 monetary award.
  • A copy of the 2009 book about Herb Block.

Also, the foundation will provide free copies of  A Cartoonist’s Life (Herb Block’s autobiography) to the top 10 winners selected by each state director. The books will be sent to the 52 JEA state directors for distribution.

Editorial Cartooning

You will find the following resources helpful in a study of editorial cartooning.

Mightier than the Sword: The Editorial Cartoon Can Appear Humorous, But When It Comes to Social Commentary, Many Have a Sharp Point
February 25, 2003, The Washington Post NIE Online Guide
(www.washpost.com/nie,  select Lesson Plans and scroll to date)
Guide includes Q and A with Tom Toles,  “Who Was Herblock? The Post’s Editorial Cartoonist for 55 Years,” “How to Draw an Editorial Cartoon” based on Herb Block’s The Cartoon, “The Mechanics of Editorial Cartooning,” three Herblock cartoons with study questions, and resources for further study. Also included is a press law look at editorial cartoons and freedom of speech.

Daryl Cagle’s Political Cartoonists Index — In addition to studying the many approaches to current events,  select Teacher Guide for elementary, middle and high school lesson plans. Another approach into the archives is www.politicalcartoons.com/

The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists— In addition to today’s political cartoons, there is a link to the NIE Editorial Cartoon Project material.

Herblock’s Gift — Library of Congress online exhibit with commentary. Plan to see the 2009 exhibit when in D.C. for the 2009 JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention.
